Frequently Asked Questions – Burning Incense at Home
1. Do I need to ventilate the room when burning incense?
We recommend burning incense in a well-ventilated space. Opening a window or door allows fresh air to circulate and helps disperse smoke. Good ventilation generally makes the experience more comfortable, particularly in smaller rooms.
2. Could incense smoke trigger a smoke detector?
Smoke detectors respond to airborne particles, and incense smoke can sometimes set them off — particularly in small, enclosed spaces. We suggest burning incense away from detectors and keeping the room ventilated. Always follow the manufacturer's guidance for your specific detector model.
3. I rent my home — are there any tenancy considerations?
Some tenancy agreements include clauses around burning candles, incense, or open flames. We recommend checking your lease or speaking with your landlord before burning incense at home. EMBER is unable to advise on individual tenancy terms.
4. How does paper incense (sheet incense) burn?
Our paper incense is designed to smoulder slowly once lit. Light one corner with a flame, allow it to catch briefly, then gently blow out the flame — the sheet will continue to smoulder and release fragrance. It should always be placed on a heat-resistant, non-flammable surface.
5. How long does a piece of incense burn?
Burn times vary by product and environmental conditions such as air movement and humidity. Please refer to the individual product listing for an approximate guide. We always recommend staying nearby while incense is burning and never leaving it unattended.
6. How do I handle ash?
Allow ash to cool completely before handling or disposing of it. Use a dedicated incense tray, ceramic dish, or another heat-resistant vessel to catch any falling ash. Dispose of cooled ash in a bin — never in a bag or container alongside flammable materials.
7. How should I store incense?
Store incense in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, open flames, and heat sources. Keep it in its original packaging or an airtight container to preserve fragrance and prevent moisture damage. Keep all incense out of reach of children and pets.
8. Any general safety tips?
Here are a few things we always suggest:
- Never leave burning incense unattended.
- Keep burning incense away from curtains, paper, fabrics, and other flammable materials.
- Place incense on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
- Extinguish incense fully before leaving the room or going to sleep.
- Follow your local fire-safety guidance — visit your local fire service website for up-to-date advice.
